The Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’, are one of Uganda’s most mysterious and toughest trekking attractions.
These are a known range of mountains astride the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and feature glaciers, alpine meadows, and tropical rainforests, among others. The Rwenzoris are the third-highest mountains in Africa, and as they approach Margherita Peak, the highest, you’ll cross through different zones of vegetation.
The lower areas of the mountain have dense scrubs with acts that include chimpanzees and other kinds of primates, while the upper areas of the mountain have a totally unusual geography of giant lobelias and groundsel plants. It is a relatively difficult trail with a rugged climb, slippery ground, and unpredictable climate conditions, but the whole experience is fantastic.
To reach the final destination of Margherita Peak at 5100 meters, one has to really earn the splendid views of other peaks and valleys.
As compared to other African mountain treks, the Rwenzori trek is relatively quieter, which is perhaps one of the reasons why it is so beautiful—one can hear nothing but the spike of the spendthrift water system and the quiet voices of the mountains.
