Takht-i-Bahi is an ancient Buddhist monastic complex located at the top of a hill in northwestern Pakistan that remains and is trying to tell the world about Gandharan culture.
Founded in the 1st century AD, it is one of the few well-kept Buddhist monastic complexes in South Asia that is enlisted with UNESCO. The city of Pushkalavati was at the center of activity during the times of Buddhist growth and served as a spiritual and educational as well as artistic point during the Gandhara period, which occupies part of contemporary Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Here, there are numerous stupas, meditation cells, yards, and monastic rooms, all chiselled out of rocks. From the grandeur of the construction and planning of Takht-i-Bahi to the awe-inspiring effect of the location seen in the hills around it, tourists are offered feelings of relaxation and favourite historical epoch’s recall. Incised and carved stones, pottery, and other artifacts exhibited at the site bear testament to the artistry of the Gandharan civilization, with special emphasis on its Greco-Indian synthesis.
Takht-i-Bahi is approachable, and once you get there, the monastery, which is still on a hill, has to be climbed. The sight of the valley below from the top and the mystique of the place make it a very fascinating place to be for anybody who has interest in the ancient world and peacefulness in them.
The complex also throws light on the cultural interaction in the area, which was a part of the Buddhist civilization that was transmitted from India through central Asia to China. The site of Takht-i-Bahi is therefore of great interest to anyone interested in history or adventure, as it gives the visitors a glimpse into the actual lifestyle of the ancient Buddhists.
