Have you ever sat outside listening to the breeze, when the wind was so nice, and heard the unmistakable sound of a mosquito buzzing in your ear?

It hurts, angers, and frightens. But have you ever wondered why mosquitoes ring in your ears? Researchers are still discovering the behavior of these mosquitoes and finding ways to prevent their effects.

What is the buzz?

The sound of mosquitoes we hear is caused by their wings. When a mosquito flies, it beats its wings repeatedly and makes a noise or sound that we hear. the noise we hear, researchers discovered that when the female mosquito flies, it beats its wings to attract the male mosquito to live or even for mating purposes.

But why do mosquitoes buzz in our ears specifically?

It is unusual for mosquitoes to absorb the carbon dioxide we breathe when we breathe. When a mosquito is looking for a blood meal, it will fly and follow the trail of carbon dioxide until it reaches the target. Since our ears are located near our nose and mouth, mosquitoes are usually attracted to the area near our heads.

How do you protect yourself?

Mosquitoes are one of the most problematic animals in the world. Therefore, there are important ways that can help you protect yourself, including:

  1. Use mosquito repellent. Look for repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, or the oil of lemon eucalyptus, as they are excellent mosquito repellents. Apply disinfectant to your skin and clothing before heading outside, and reapply as needed.
  2. Wear protective clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, so it is best to wear light-colored clothing during mosquito season. Long shirts and pants can also provide an extra barrier between you and mosquitoes.
  3. Eliminate standing water. This can reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so removing any sources of standing water, such as birdbaths, flower pots, and garbage cans, is important. If you have a pool, make sure it is well maintained, and if you have a pond, consider using mosquito nets or other products to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
