An ophthalmologist, Dr. Nzabamwita Joseph, says that a person can avoid eye diseases at a rate of 80%. In an interview with Kigali Today, Dr. Nzabamwita announced that anyone can prevent this disease at a high rate using the following methods:

The first way is to avoid anything that irritates the eye. Dr. Nzabamwita gives an example of avoiding going to places where there is dust that can go to the face and avoiding going to places where there is air pollution and normal smoke.

When a person is in a place where there are things that can hurt him and make him at risk of eye diseases, it is better to wear glasses that protect him from this waste that penetrates the face and something that causes the eye to be injured.

Dr. Nzabamwita says that wood smoke, car smoke, wind containing dust, and sand could be prevented by using non-eyeglasses.

According to the doctor, there are other non-communicable diseases, including high blood pressure and diabetes, that cause eye diseases and blindness if the patient is not treated properly, and there may be pea.

He said, “It is possible to avoid high blood pressure and diabetes, exercise, and all the things that worry you and other reasons why you have these diseases because they are among the factors that increase the risk of eye disease, and sometimes he has old age” disease.

People under the age of 40 are advised to visit the health center at least once every two years to be diagnosed with eye disease. Those with chronic diseases are advised to get checked as often as possible when they arrive at the doctor’s office to check their eye health.

Research conducted by the Ministry of Health shows that in Rwanda, one percent (1%) of people over the age of 50 are blind due to preventable reasons.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that the number of people suffering from eye diseases increased by 45% between 2017 and 2020, from 512,321 people to 743,399.

Dr Nzabamwita advises those with eye problems to go to doctors because there are eye care services at health centers. The first way is to avoid anything that hurts the eye.
