Throughout the year, lots of people die from drowning accidents, and most of them were within an arm’s reach of safety. Here are four main points explaining why so many drownings occur at the water’s edge:
Lack of Swimming Skills
Most of the individuals that camp around water sources have poor swimming skills, or worse, they do not have any swimming skills at all. When they get into the water over their heads or engage in a current they cannot handle, they get swept away.
Not being able to swim will increase their feeling of being out of control, and panic will set in even in shallow water, which leads to drowning.
Unexpected Water Conditions
That has warned that water conditions can change quickly, even within a short distance from the shore. Currents, rip tides, uncontrolled drop-off spots, and other water areas can pose a real threat unsuspecting swimmers.
However, people greatly underplay the strength of water and, at the same time, overemphasize their preparations for various events. This is a dangerous mixture, especially for those unable to swim well or who do not know how to swim.
Alcohol and Drug Use
Alcohol and drugs affect a person’s decision-making abilities, motor skills and reflexes. Most drowning accidents happen when the concerned person is under the influence of ethanol or narcotics.
They may act in ways that would not otherwise, like swimming in zones that are prohibited or underestimating the strength of the water. Cognition is affected, in that mental functioning is diminished, and people with these disorders cannot discern threats and how to avoid them.
Inadequate Supervision
Little kids and those who have not mastered swimming should always be attended to if they are close to water. Drowning happens when supervision is lost; this could be for even a brief moment.
Some of the things that cause inattention include using a phone, talking to other people, and anything that, for a second, pulls attention away from the road.
