1. Take an epic river cruise in Colombia.
Around 80% of Colombia’s population lives in the Magdalena River basin, which flows approximately 1,600 km from the Andes to the Caribbean. The cruises inaugurated by AmaWaterways take the course with seven-night stays, from Cartagena to Barranquilla, via Mompós.
Stops in colonial towns, vallenato and cumbia concerts, and a visit to a village on stilts highlight the culture of the region along this waterway.
2. Route 66: Go On a Road Trip to the West
For nearly a century, Route 66 has attracted travelers. An excursion along the “Mother Road” through New Mexico allows you to discover must-see attractions,
such as the quirky motels and gift shops in and around Tucumcari, as well as the symbolic carvings of the Petroglyph National Monument. In Gallup, you can also attend performances featuring Zuni, Lakota and Diné (Navajo) dancers.
The highway passes through Albuquerque for approximately 18 miles. Thanks to the ongoing restoration of Central Avenue’s vintage neon signs, the city is getting a real facelift.
Along the way, stop at the new West Central Route 66 Visitor Center, with its museum and outdoor amphitheater. It must host events, such as exhibitions of vintage cars or open-air cinemas.
3. Explore a museum in the middle of the desert in Algeria
Algeria is home to one of the largest concentrations of rock art in the world (see our February 2024 issue). Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, the largest in Africa, contains geological wonders such as towers, arches, and various sandstone outcrops. But these “stone forests” are only part of the story.
Neolithic herders and hunter-gatherers left some 15,000 petroglyphs there—elephants, giraffes, and rhinoceroses, among others. The presence of these animals, generally associated with sub-Saharan Africa, testifies that this arid nature was once a meadow crisscrossed by waterways. Visitors with enough time can combine an excursion to Tassili with a visit to the extraordinary mountain range of Ahaggar National Park.
4. Dive with sharks in Western Australia
Stretching more than 1,100 km along the Indian Ocean, north of Perth, Western Australia’s Coral Coast is dotted with wonders, of which the Ningaloo Reef is the star. There, you can dive with giants: between 300 and 500 whale sharks, one of the largest populations on the planet, gather there every year between March and July. And, from July to October, some 40,000 humpback whales.
On the Coral Coast, you can also observe more than 10,000 dugongs in Shark Bay and swim with manta rays in Coral Bay.
5. Hike on the slopes of a volcano in Panama.
A leader in sustainable development, Panama launched the “1,000 Kilometers of Trails” project, which aims to bring outdoor recreation and green tourism to rural communities and protected areas.
