Southern Mexico presents one of the most fabulous archaeological treasures of the ancient Mayan civilization, Palenque, that sets in the jungle of Chiapas.
In contrast to the large-scale attractions of Tikal or Chichen Itza, Palenque is a much less extensive site, yet, in terms of architectural quality, sculptural achievement, and epigraphy, some of the finest examples of Mayan art can be admired here. Palenque is said to have been established in between the 7th and 9th centuries AD and was noted for development in the reign of the well-known king Pakal the Great.
Among the major buildings at Palenque, probably the most famous is the Temple of the Inscriptions, where the Pakal tomb was found in the middle of the twentieth century. This large pyramid has fine sculptures around it depicting the genealogy of Pakal’s lineage that de-links them from the immortals. The whole European methodology of archeology is a very stipulated method, which, when applied, was made very clear by the finding of Pakal’s sarcophagus with lid carving out the actual journey into the Mayan underworld and the after-death journey.
