Our universe is full of stars; at the end of their lives, some of them die quietly, others go out in spectacular explosions, and some give birth to black holes.
If there is a supermassive star, that’s a hundred times the mass of the sun. At the end of its life, the core of the engine runs out of fuel. There is nothing left to hold it up, and the core collapses down into a blackhole. When that happens, the enormous gravity generated at the heart of supermassive stars runs wild. There is an example of a dying star, VY. It’s more than a billion miles across. Like all stars, its a giant nuclear fusion reactor pumping energy outward at the same time. But when the stars run out of fuel, fusion stops, and the stalemate ends, gravity wins. In a millisecond, the core shrinks to a fraction of its original size, and a baby black hole is born. Immediately, it starts to cannibalize what’s left of the star. As matter swirls into the black hole, it gets incredibly hot, and there are magnetic forces.
The black hole is so strong, not even light, that the fastest known entity can escape it. The boundary of a black hole. The boundary of a black line is called the event horizon. a point of no return beyond what we can’t truly see. When something crosses the event horizon, it collapses into the black hole’s singularity, an infinitely small, infinitely dense point where space, time, and the laws of physics no longer apply.
