Why graphene battery technology will replace lithium in future

Electric vehicles have become popular in recent times. Their batteries are powered by lithium. But the manufacturers will agree on this: lithium-ion batteries are not good enough if we want to keep the revolution in EVs alive. Therefore, manufacturers have been looking for other option that can solve the problem lithium batteries have and offer better alternatives for EV batteries. One of these option includes Graphene, a material that has remarkable properties and potential applications. So, how good can graphene batteries be, and what can they bring to the EV industry?

Graphene is a wonder material that consists of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern. It was discovered in 2004 by two scientist who won the Nobel prize in physics for their groundbreaking work.

Graphene has amazing properties that make it ideal for many technological applications. graphene batteries are one of the most promising examples of how graphene can revolutionize the field of energy storage, Graphene batteries are batteries that use graphene to enhance their performance, Graphene can be used in electrons, which are parts of the battery that store and release energy or as an additive with substance that is added to the battery to improve its characteristics.

Graphene has been a hot topic in the field of energy storage ever since it was first isolated. Researchers and companies have been exploring the potential of graphene to create better batteries for various applications, such as electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops and renewable energy sources as soon as the first commercial graphene manufacturers were established, there was a steady stream of announcements related to batteries that use graphene in some form or another.

Graphene batteries have several advantages over lithium batteries:

  • Faster charging times: one of the most amazing features of graphene batteries is their fast charging capability. Graphene batteries can charge much faster that lithium-ion batteries, with some prototypes claiming to charge up to 60 times faster. It’s because graphene is highly conductive and allows for faster electron transfer between the electrodes, which are  the parts of the battery that store and release energy.
  • Longer life times: one of the other features of graphene is their life span. It can last longer than traditional lithium-ion batteries. This is because the graphene material is highly stable and does not degrade as quickly as other battery materials, such as liquid electrolyte that is used in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Higher Energy Density: Another feature of graphene is that it has higher density and can store more energy in the same surface area of space.
  • Improved safety: graphene batteries are less prone to overheating and thermal runaway than other batteries, reducing the risk of fire and explosion. This is because the graphene material is highly conductive and can dissipate heat more efficiently, reducing the risk of thermal runaway, which is a chain reaction of heat generation and gas release that can cause a battery to burst into flames.

These are facts that prove graphene battery technology will replace lithium batteries with many advantages over lithium ones.
